The Top Five Reasons to Start a Yoga Practice

Yoga is a workout that dates back to ancient times, originating in India. While it is considered an exercise designed to relieve the body of stress and to relax while conditioning the body (hello, who does not need that, raise your hand), people often shy away from starting a practice because they think they need to be flexible. The truth is anyone can do it and here are five of the main reasons why you want to start!

  1. It IS a great workout: Yoga works all parts of the body so no matter what form of yoga practice, so long as it involves the postures, you are waking up your muscles!

  1. It gets you in touch with your body: Yoga postures are designed to move your body and increase strength and durability, but because of the meditative and mindful components, as you practice you begin to learn what movements are really working for you and what is not.

  1. It can help your breathing: This is HUGE! For real. A big part of yoga is the breathing component. As you do the different yoga positions and engage in pranayama (breathing techniques), you learn to manage your breathing. People with certain breathing problems may benefit from yoga because it encourages expansion of the lungs to help improve lung capacity.

  1. It can help you sleep: Yoga is known to relax the mind by relieving stress. Most yoga poses are designed to be done at night; thereby calming the mind and facilitating better sleep. When doing light yoga right before sleep, you may fall asleep faster and/or increase the quality of sleep.

  1. Yoga can help with migraines: And, last, but not least: Studies made in 2007 show that yoga helps people have less frequent and less intense migraines than someone who does not do yoga. Certain yoga poses boost circulation and blood flow to the brain which lessen any pain or throbbing in your head.
